Moving or downsizing?

  • Moving to a new home is a great time to purge and start fresh.  Donate or trash anything you haven't used in over a year.  Often, just thinking about having to move something and find a new place for it in your new home is incentive enough to get rid of it.
  • One to two weeks before your move:
    • Set up utility services at your new address.
    • Provide your new address to regular service providers (electric, water, publishers, telephone and cable companies).
    • Close bank accounts and have your funds wired to your new bank.  Make sure there are no outstanding checks or automatic payments that haven't been processed.
    • Collect your valuables from your safe-deposit box.
    • Check with your insurance agent to ensure you'll be covered through your homeowner's or renter's policy during the move.
    • Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer inside to control odors.
